Famous, Famous to Fifteen People

At the start of term, I set up a Facebook page for my teaching self. Rather than becoming friends with students – something I am both prohibited from doing and have no interest in doing – this allows them to follow the stuff I publish and talk to me out in the open.

I mentioned it to my classes and, as you would expect, none of these students followed me. Some former students and some friends did follow, thirty-six in all. I figured this was a reasonable number.

Yesterday, something happened. I went from 38 “fans” to 86 in the course of that one day. As a Year-10 student quite astutely commented, “Facebook groups seem to have a snowball effect. Today the snowballs have been aimed at you. “

Well the long weekend is over, and I went from 39 to 131 fans. I figure that much be every student who has ever heard of me now.
